Armenian singer-songwriter Sirusho released her new single “Where Were You“. She released two versions of the song: an Armenian-language version named “Կգա մի օր” and an English-language version. “Where Were You” is written by Sirusho herself, Rama Duke (First verse) and Elaine Tsaghikyan. The Armenian version is written by Avet Barseghyan.
The English version (“Where Were You“) is addressed to the people who don’t recognize the death of 800,000 to 1.5 million Armenian as genocide by the Ottoman Empire in 1915. On the other hand the Armenian version (“Կգա մի օր“) is a message by Sirusho to the Armenian people.
Here is what Sirusho says about her new song:
My recent works are inspired by the Armenian beats. The folk dance “Yerek Votk of Lori”, both with its rhythmical structure and the dance steps , is used as a basis on which we created a completely new song and dance. Throughout our history, even in the most difficult times, we were able to find strength and courage through singing and dancing. This is a characteristic of a strong nation which I’m very proud of.
Each language has its own message. The Armenian lyrics are what I feel I want to say to the Armenians. The English lyrics are a question or a demand addressed to the “indifferent” people of the world.
I want to say Thank You to the great people I worked with on this project.
The music video of “Where Were You” includes both versions. First the English version and second the Armenian version. Both music videos are for most parts identical yet there are small differences. Only a day after its release the music video is already watched more than 190,000 times on YouTube.
Siranush Harutyunyan or better known under her stage name Sirusho is a Armenian singer-songwriter who is internationally best known for her participation in the Eurovision Song Contest 2008. With the song “Qélé, Qélé” she finished fourth in the Grand Final. As a singer Sirusho received several awards in Armenia . She released four albums and numerous singles. Some notable single releases are “Qélé, Qélé”, “PreGomesh”, “Erotas”, “Time To Pray (feat. Boaz Mauda & Jelena Tomašević)”, “See (feat. Sakis Rouvas)”, “I Like It” and “Tariner (with Harout Pamboukjian)”.
